While the human body can handle long periods without food and water, we cannot do without the intake of air. While the presence or absence of breath relates to the absolute of life or death, the qualities of your breath have a significant influence on your overall wellbeing.
The pervasiveness of mental and emotional stress is the dominant influence on disease states and overall wellbeing. This fact is well accepted within the modern medical establishment. Next time you’re stressed (shouldn’t take long) take a moment to observe your breath. The likelihood is that your breath has become short, irregular, and superficial. On the contrary, in a relaxed, joyful (non-stressed) state, the breath is deep and rhythmic. This is the breath in its most natural state.
Deep rhythmic breathing and stressful states cannot coexist. This may sound simplistic or stating the obvious, however, the aspect that’s not so obvious is our ability to control our breath and consequently our ability to restore mind and body wellbeing by restoring deep rhythmic breathing.
The lesson to keep top of mind is that everything follows the breath . Make it a daily practice to be mindful of breath, and over time you’ll find that you develop a natural resilience against stress and promote a state of wellbeing. And if someone ever asks if you meditate you can truthfully tell them yes! Breath mindfulness is a form of meditation.
